My 6¢: I purchased Phytosésame Express Hydrating Conditioner many months ago when I decided to try out the Phyto line that I’d heard so many good things about. Phyto is known for their plant based formulations which are usually chock full of carefully selected ingredients. The product is definitely on the pricey side (as are all Phyto products) but I was willing to give it a try.
My first impression was “My goodness the smell is divine!” The scent is a mild cocoa scent…chocolatey but not overpowering – like I said divine! Some years ago I thought that a chocolate scented conditioner would have been ideal. If I had found this product at the time I would have been in heaven. Anyhow – I digress. The product itself has a brown colour and light consistency that is easily distributed throughout the hair. For my hair, the Phytosésame worked best as a light conditioner. By light conditioner, I mean when used for pre-wash conditioning, light detangling before applying another conditioner, or just as an in shower conditioner (without deep conditioning with heat). I did not see any added benefits of using it as a deep conditioner and to be fair, the product isn’t marketed as a deep conditioner, but I like to try out my products in different ways to see what works best for my hair.
As far as its detangling properties goes, I found that the Phytosésame Express Hydrating Conditioner detangled well when my hair was 3 or less weeks post relaxer. After 3 weeks when the new growth started to come back in, it didn’t detangle the new growth as effortlessly and I usually had to resort to another conditioner that was thicker, heavier and had a bit more punch. For this reason, I think this product would have more consistent results on someone with very fine light hair or 3a/b hair type.
With respect to its moisturizing properties, I liked how it made my hair feel when it was applied. My hair felt soft, silky and supple to the touch. The smell made the experience that much better as I massaged in the product and got lost in the smell of the conditioner. When the product was rinsed however, I felt as though some of the silky suppleness was also rinsed away. My hair felt slightly stronger to the touch, but some of that softness was lost. That is not to say that my hair felt bad in anyway (because it didn’t), but I was just hoping that some of that silky suppleness would be maintained after rinsing.
Overall, I thought the product did an okay job. I loved the smell, and the way it felt when it was applied, however due to the price and the lack of consistent results I won’t be replacing this conditioner. That’s too bad though – I really loved the smell 🙁
