Huetiful Hair Steamer Review
Claims: The Huetiful Hair Steamer “is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of wavy, curly, and kinky-curly hair. It restores moisture up to 5x more effectively than deep conditioners or oil treatments alone. By doing so, we hydrate dry hair and reduce breakage and split ends.”
The Huetiful Hair Steamer achieves these results by producing steam that lifts the hair cuticles that cover and protect every strand of hair. By doing so, we allow the conditioner or hair treatment to be pulled deeply inside the hair shaft. While the hair cuticles are open, the Huetiful Hair Steamer bathes your hair with warm mist to replenish lost moisture.”

Huetiful was nice enough to send me one of their steamers to review. I was honoured and frankly happy because even though I used to steam my hair regularly before, I haven’t in recent times because when we moved to our new house, the movers broke the knob that turns it on. I therefore have a fully functioning steamer that has been rendered completely useless because I’m unable to turn it on. You would understand how truly happy I was to be contacted to ‘test drive’ this steamer from Huetiful.
When the steamer arrived I was ecstatic. It was like Xmas in April! Before even seeing the steamer I was impressed by the packaging. I received the CharyJay edition and the box is beautiful…it features photos of hair blogger CharyJay. This lady’s hair is gorgeous! It would inspire you to go natural….no kidding! I actually gazed at the box and seriously contemplated going natural! Normally I don’t consider going natural because well – I’m fearful. There I said it. I’m afraid of the unknown. I can’t remember what being natural entails and that scares the *bleep* out of me. But after seeing CharyJ’s hair on that box, it was as though I was transfixed. I saw myself natural – if only for a few seconds. It didn’t matter that my curl pattern would be nothing like CharyJ’s or that my hair might not have the same thickness etc.-seeing her on the box just made it seem doable. But I digress.
Assembly: Once I got past drooling over the box, I opened the package to find 4 pieces. Not what I was expecting to be honest. I thought that setup was going to be a nightmare, so much so that I had already enlisted the hubby’s agreement to set it up even before opening the box. I’m happy to report that assembly is very simple and intuitive. There are 4 pieces in the box – the steaming base, the bracket, the hood and a facial steamer attachment. To assemble the steamer you only need 3 pieces. The bracket connects to the steaming unit, the hood slots into the brackets and then the nozzle from the bracket is securely fixed onto the hood. That’s it! It takes less than 2 mins if you read the instructions, 3 if you don’t. Water is added through the top of the steaming unit and a clearly indicated mark shows you the max water line so you don’t overfill the tank/jug. If you want to use the facial steamer attachment, you remove the hood and bracket and the attachment fits directly into the steamer base.
Features: The steamer has an Ozone feature that kills drandruff causing bacteria thereby improving scalp health. In addition, built in safety features help ensure that you don’t accidentally fry the device. When it comes to the Huetiful if the jug is overfilled it won’t operate and also when the water in the jug reaches a low level the unit will automatically shut off. For me these are what I like to call “put-my-mind-at-ease-features” because 1) I wouldn’t want to destroy the unit and 2) after growing up with an electrical engineer for a dad, it was constantly drilled into my head that heating appliances are the #1 cause of house fires. To this day I’m still somewhat fearful of forgetting them on, using them improperly etc. I guess Dad accomplished his goal but given the safety features of the Huetiful I don’t have to be paranoid.
My Experience: I’ve used the Huetiful Hair Steamer a few times now and each time I’ve used it, I have applied a deep conditioner to my hair before slipping under the hood. Sometimes I used Mizani Moisturefuse, other times Ojon Restorative Treatment and yet other times Keracare Humecto. I’ve also used it both with and without the Ozone feature and can say that there seems to be more steam when the Ozone feature is activated. I don’t have a dandruff problem so I did not notice any decrease in dandruff from having the Ozone activated.
I’m relaxed and my hair has been very dry and brittle of late (no doubt thanks to winter). I was also experiencing very difficult wash days because of the dryness – tangling, breakage etc. By incorporating the Huetiful Hair Steamer into my routine, the steam has really helped to open up my hair cuticle and moisturize my hair. I wouldn’t say that my hair moisture problems are solved just yet, but each time I use the Huetiful Hair SteamerI do notice that the moisture level in my hair has improved which translates to easier detangling for me. Last weekend was the least stressful wash day I’ve had in a long time and the only thing that has changed in my routine is the addition of steam. With continued use of the Huetiful Hair Steamer I only expect my wash days to get better and better and for my hair to “glow” from the intense moisturization. Some of us relaxed ladies have the misconception that steamers are only for naturalistas. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact relaxed ladies may benefit more since the chemicals in relaxers rob our hair of moisture. Improvements: There’s no doubt that I love this little steamer, but if there were two improvements I could make they would be:
- A deeper hood – currently the hood is shallow. Those with larger craniums or very thick hair both of which I’m guilty of may find that the steam does not reach the very back back of the head so I sometimes have to use the facial attachment to steam the back portion of my hair. It would be nice if the hood was deeper so that my entire head got steamed.
- A bottle to catch the run off condensed steam. Currently there is a plug on the hood that prevents the steam from dripping onto the floor. It would be nice if there was a small bottle attachment that could be easily removed and drained after each use.
Overall, I have to say that I am quite impressed by this steamer. Imagine a kettle with a hood, that’s exactly what it seems like. It’s small and portable enough for me store somewhere other than my basement; setup is easy and the steamer, despite being so small provides a heck of a lot of steam. Every time that I have used it I have been amazed by the amount of steam this little device can generate. In fact, the little Huetiful produces more consistent steam than the standing model steamer I purchased a few years ago. A shame because the standing model goes for almost double what the Huetiful is available for. Testament to the statement that “good things come in small packages”.
****The Huetiful Hair Steamer was given to me to review from the perspective of a relaxed person. I had no obligation to provide a positive review. This is my honest opinion about the product.****
