My 6¢: As I Am Leave-In Conditioner is a sulphate-free, silicone free, paraben-free leave-in conditioner with a very sweet smell but not a true coconut scent even though coconut oil is the second ingredient. It more smells like coconut with an underlying bubble gum note. Regardless it smells nice. Y’all know I love nice smelling hair products so it gets kudos from me just on the scent.
The product itself is a cloudy pearlized white and has a relatively runny consistency. It is very light so finer hair textures shouldn’t experience any heavy residue.
I apply this after washing and conditioning with other As I Am products as well as other brands. In terms of its claims, I’ll have to admit that it does a great job of detangling my hair and leaving it soft and manageable. When applied, this leave-in gives great slip and melts away the tangles. My hair is quite coarse so I normally have to work the product in a bit. If too much is applied it will sit on the surface of the hair but I have not experienced it drying with any remaining residue, which is good. It plays well with other products so I can apply gel after applying this leave in without experiencing any grainy residue as I sometimes experience with some other products. It’s great to use before the As I Am Curling Jelly because it helps with curl definition which is further enhanced after applying the Curling Jelly. Sometimes when I wake up with bed hair, I apply this leave-in to my TWA to refresh my hair a bit before styling.
I don’t experience any noted shine from using the As I Am Leave-In Conditioner and the moisturizing properties seem to disappear once the product dries into my hair. After it dries I find that my hair feels quite dry as though I didn’t apply anything in the first place. I suspect this might be due to the “organic strengthening agent” (my hair does not like protein) or the coconut oil (I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think my hair is very fond of coconut oil). I usually have to follow this leave-in with a cream, butter or oil to maintain softness and moisture.
Will I purchase As I Am Leave-In Conditioner again? Not sure. As I Am no longer ships directly to Canada (something to do with not have French labels) and I don’t think I’m willing to pay $18+ for it here. If I do repurchase it’ll be because I know it’s great for detangling or because I know it works well before the Curling Jelly which I like. For now though I will continue my search for a leave-in that will have lasting moisturizing effects.
Having said that though, if you’re just looking for a great detangler that will provide good slip without weighing your hair down, you can definitely give this one a try. I think it would be a good for both relaxed and natural hair and who knows maybe you’ll benefit from more of the product claims and benefits than I did.
